Although not totally necessary, you can own your part of the internet
and give it any name you want, so long as someone else hasn't already
claimed your name. This is not absolutely necessary and is the
only real expense to have your own web page. So, if you decide to
go with your own domain, start here.
A domain is an easy to remember name for a numbered address to your
web site. We looked around and found a name we liked and purchased
it for an annual cost of $35. If you decide to go this way, you
need to look for a domain that is not already taken. Start with
this site and look to see if your preferred domain name is available.

Then you need a place to store your web site. This is called a
server. Think of it as a computer that is always connected to the
internet, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. If you are like me, you dial
up for your connection to the internet. So, any pages you create
on your computer would not be available to anyone else.
Of course your ISP is always connected to the internet. So,
usually they offer space on their server (computer) for web pages.
Another option is to use a server on the web. Here are a few to
look into.
Free Webspace Providers:
We happen to have our web site on Tripod.com
for over two years and they have been great. Keep in mind that in
order to offer the webspace for free, they usually add pop-up windows or
advertisements to your page. In this way, the commercial sponsors
are paying for your space.
Some will let you pay for the space yourself so you can
spare your website visitors from the annoyance of all the
advertisements. We have that option and it can cost up to $50 each
year. If the ads don't bother you, that's the best way to go.
Go through the sign-up process for one of these services
and you will have your own web server on the internet. |

The next step is to think about what you want to say on your web
site. Think about what makes you unique and different from the
rest of us. Share a special interest, hobby, skill, talent or
belief. Don't be afraid to browse or surf through the home pages
of other people and see what they have done. Note what you liked
and didn't. When you figure it out for yourself, write it out and
think about how you want to tell your story. |

Once you've decided what to say, collect the content you want to show
the world. Look for graphics, pictures, music and whatever will
help you tell your story. Did you see any pictures on the web that
you really liked? You may be able to save the pictures onto your
computer and use them on your own web site. A simple "right
click" will help you SAVE PICTURE AS.... and save it to your hard
drive. So now, dig up all the pictures from the internet that
float your boat and get ready to surf! |
